The way to a man’s heart is definitely through his tummy

I have two boys who love their food. They are 6ft2 and 6ft 3 and they eat like horses. I have always tried really hard to make sure they get a good diet so we always have crudites with hoummus before supper, loads of vegetables, protein at breakfast rather than cereals and so on.

When they went off to University I was worried that they would start to eat more fast food rather than cook - they were both in non-catered accommodation, so they were responsible for every meal and for managing the cost of it!

Within days they started asking me for recipes of their favourite meals and even though they had phoned for a purpose I was just really happy that 1) they still needed me and 2) I got to chat to them often.

Over time they both became more confident with their cooking and tried loads of new and varied recipes. It has become a bonding experience for me to dicuss menus and ingredients with them and so gratifying to see strong, healthy boys who love to cook for themselves.

The key to it has been spending time cooking with them and discussing how to use left overs, as well as helping them to create shopping lists and exploring menus together.
